From Simmons Mattresses:
Dear Heather,
Thank you for your e-mail expressing your concerns about the NBC reality TV
show "The Baby Borrowers." We appreciate your reservations about the
premise of the show and want to let you know that the couples are under
24-hour supervision by nannies. Also, the children's parents are stationed
next door watching via monitor and can step in at any time. Simmons decided
to provide mattresses for the show, for all ages, because we feel that the
show can be educational and teach valuable life lessons for both teenagers
and the viewers watching the show.
The show is based on the hit British program that is now used as an
educational tool in schools across the country. We share your concerns
regarding the safety of children, and rest assured that we did our due
diligence on the overall safety and goals of the show from an educational
perspective, as well as the proximity of the parents, before agreeing to be
a part of it. We would in no way associate with something that would
jeopardize any person's safety. Safety is the number one focus of Simmons
Bedding Company.
Thank you!

Subject: The Baby Borrowers
I am writing in regard to your sponsorship of "The Baby Borrowers," a new
NBC "reality show."
I have enjoyed reality shows in the past, most especially The Biggest Loser,
where adults compete, knowing full and well what they will experience in
their quest to "win."
However, putting a baby in the hands of a stranger, teenage strangers at
that, is nothing less than child abuse. Babies do not consent to
experiments. The long term consequences of abandonment by the parents, the
potential of abuse by teenagers, and the sad exploitive interests of the
American public are all shameful reasons to abandon this project.
Since this concept is proudly being touted by NBC, I will sadly swear off
watching The Biggest Loser, as well as this show. In addition, my family, as
well as many friends, will not be purchasing your wares until you realize
the dangers of supporting something as stupid and reckless as The Baby
Borrowers.
Sincerely,
Heather Doak
