I read with interest your post regarding Dr Palmer and tongue tie. I work in a Paediatric ward and yesterday I was chatting to a mother who whose baby was re-admitted with jaundice. The day before she had her son's 100% tongue tie snipped at 14 days of age. She described the unbelievable relief she immediately felt with the breastfeeds after the release. The breastfeed I observed was very comfortable and pain free. She has now book her 16 month old son into see the same surgeon because she recognised the long term consequences of tongue tie. She described the pain, nipple abrasions and sheer pain of breastfeeding prior. Unfortunately the paediatric surgeon had been away the previous week or it would have been snipped much sooner, and the person who picked up the tongue tie was a young resident doctor doing her first paediatric term. And interestingly our Director of Paediatrics, who is very supportive of breastfeeding, got me to present breastfeeding information to the residents during the first week of their Paediatric term. It just proves that such training can be very worthwhile.
