I've enjoyed running a 2-hour Bf classes for a number of years. The couples
who come to the classes have made the decision to breastfeed. I talk as if
breastfeeding is simply the normal way to feed babies. "Why breastfeed" is
not discussed specifically, but I find plenty of opportunity to sneak in the
odd really impressive fact to reinforce their decision - the Dads usually
like these (especially if numbers are involved).
The 2 main reasons why women stop breastfeeding before they had planned to
is *pain* and *not enough*. So these areas are my focus. As well as
dispelling many myths along the way.
I start by asking the participants what questions they have, what have they
heard about breastfeeding and why they think women have problems. I write
the keywords on a board.
Invariably "pain" and "not enough" come up - I highlight these and explain
why the focus of the class will be on these.
After a brief discussion on how the breasts work we address "pain" (it
involves showing a latch video and having a doll to demo/practice with). We
then discuss "not enough" and then check the keywords on the board to see if
there are any queries still to be answered.
A variety of non-commercial handouts are available.
