WOMEN WORKING LATER INTO PREGNANCY, TAKING SHORTER MATERNITY LEAVE 

According to a report released last week by the US Census Bureau, women are
working later into their pregnancies and taking shorter maternity leaves.
The report, which analyzed data on pregnant women since the 1960s, found
that 67.2 percent of women in 2000 worked during their pregnancies, compared
to 44.4 percent in 1961. And significantly fewer women quit their jobs after
giving birth than in the 1960s. The study attributes many of these trends to
advancing age and higher education levels of childbearing women, as well as
the increasing need for families to have two incomes and better childcare
systems. However, the study found that 42.5 percent of women in 2000 had to
take unpaid leave after giving birth. For the complete report, go to
