Hi All,
Permission to post.
Baby #4 boy DOB 1-25-08 - Weight: 7 14 Homebirth. Lowest weight 7 7
on day 3
Mom presented with sore nipples by day 2, Midwife worked with her on latch
and positioning, but still sore. Mom called me on Day 5.
Interesting history:
Baby #1 boy minimal breast changes very low milk supply milk never
really came in.
Baby #2 girl noticeable breast changes, milk came in fine, baby breastfed
well, gained well.
Baby # 3 boy stillbirth at 32 wks (knot in cord) minimal breast changes
in pregnancy, milk sort of came in after birth, dried up within a few days
no engorgement.
Baby #4 boy minimal breast changes during pregnancy milk came in on
evening of day 2 but breasts soft and flaccid by evening of day 3 baby
nursing, but getting more upset, nipples sore. Mom started supplementing on
Day 4 doing the nurse then supplement routine.
Mom is now pumping (started evening of Day 5) getting ½ -1 ounce every 2-3
hours. If baby nurses and she pumps after - she gets the same amount.
Obviously we have some latch or baby issues working here too
but the supply
is the big question.
No history of hormonal issues, infertility, PCOS, low thyroid nothing. I
have not seen her in person yet will see her Saturday. We are giving a
couple days to pump and see what supply will do with consistent stimulation,
let nipples heal, feed baby and give me time to do some research on this
odd presentation of low milk supply.
Interestingly enough it seems the supply issues coincide with boy
babies
It may just be a coincidence, but what a big one! If there were an
issue with hypoplasia I would expect there to have been a problem with baby
#2 as well but that baby fed and gained just fine.
Thoughts? Im stumped and looking for input
Thanks!
