I know Dr Wight has answered this question more than once. There is a very
thorough protocol at the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine website (
www.bfmed.org) entitled: NICU Graduate Going
Home.<http://www.bfmed.org/ace-files/protocol/nicugradprotocol.pdf>
that details how a decision should be made regarding supplementation. But this
baby does need an extra source of iron because of being born 10 weeks early,
that is not optional. Whether or not formula fortification is needed, you
need labwork to know. (Phosphorus, alk phos and BUN)

I would print out the protocol and share it with the aprents, and have the
parents share it with the baby's Dr. They should then be willing to do the
labs to find out.
