When my youngest daughter was about 6, she was diagnosed by the school
audiology nursing service as having a noticeable hearing deficit (basically
she heard everything as a whisper). We were referred to an audiologist
physician for consultation and, after his testing, the recommendation was
made for tubes in her ears. I went back to the audiology nurse and asked
her opinion. She said something to the effect of "Those drs are idiots,
tubes would not be a good idea in this case, they can cause scarring that
will worsen things, your daughter will probably outgrow it, their testing
equipment is not as good as mine, I know what I'm doing and they don't." I
said to her, "Right, I think we'll go with your recommendation." She was in
complete shock. She said "You are the first parent who has ever taken my
advice over the dr." My daughter got a severe earache that winter while up
skiing on the local mountain. She came down the mountain and home and that
night her eardrum ruptured (woke with goo all over the pillow) and she has
had perfect hearing ever since. Doctors scare the pants of parents that the
eardrum might rupture but that is what they do artificially when they place
the tubes. Eardrums heal. I think the hearing problem got started in the
first place from being prescribed antibx for an ear infection when she was
younger.

The point of this, is that I'll be forever grateful to that nurse for
keeping on speaking her truth despite the fact that she could have gotten
flack from a dr. and despite the fact that parents didn't even value her
input.
