Thanks for all the thoughtful responses to my question about the woman
having back pain while nursing. As always I am overwhelmed by the joy of
having this site as a resource and a place to bounce ideas around.
I did consider referred and/or gas pain when evaluating this woman, but have
to say that this situation seemed very unique to me. I worked as an OB nurse
for 10 years in a hospital with a very high C/S rate and saw tons of referred
pain and free floating gas pain. This situation seemed somewhat different to
me and that is why I posted about it. What was so striking was the total
absence of pain without nursing and then the slow building of pain throughout
the nursing session, in the exact same spot on each side and on both sides
while double-pumping. I have to say that while I think it is possible that any of
the opinions offered might be right, the one about subluxated ribs seems
particularly promising. Because it seemed possible from her description of the
pain that she might have rib involvement, I had asked her durning the initial
consult about rib pain and she did report that she had exquisite rib pain "in the
front" on her left side for months during the pregnancy, to the point where
she couldn't be touched in that spot. I wasn't sure how that fit into the
picture, and my understanding of ribs is limited to my A & P course in Nursing
School from 25 years ago, but the idea of a subluxated rib does seem to pull
all the threads together. I did recommend that she see a chiropractor and will
let all of you know what the outcome is. Again, thanks for all the input.
Kathy
