Michelle, over the years I have had moms ask me "how" to make yogurt out of
breastmilk. Usually, it is not a medical need, but a feeling that yogurt is a
somehow, magical food, and that it would be "better" for the baby then human
milk in it's natural state. I advise them that human milk taken the way it comes
out of the breast is the safest and most advisable way to get it into a baby.
However, your client has a baby with some swallowing problems.
Rather than mess with probable bacterial contamination, causing unknown
problems with changing the composition of human milk etc, I can advise a
product (which I have no financial stake in and in fact have never used
myself, but saw used with children with muscle problems and inability to
swallow) called "Thick It." This is commonly used with children and adults with
CP, different types of neurological and muscular issues which effect
swallowing "thin" liquids.
"Thick It" is added to a fluid to make it easier to swallow.
It can be purchased at most drug stores. It is not supposed to effect the
nutritional composition of the foods it is added to.
However, a baby with an issue as this, may need Occupational and Physical
Therapy, and starting in infancy is really best. She may want to talk to her
baby's doctor about the swallowing issue, and who to see about any future
problems the baby may face due to muscular disabilities.
One question: Does this baby have a problem with swallowing WHILE actively
breastfeeding? Or is only when the milk is given as some type of supplement
with a different transfer method? (Bottle, spoon, cup, SoftFeeder.)
