Personally, as a birth professional and a 2 out of 4 time cesarean mother
this is an appalling practice.
The ONLY reason I was able to breastfeed my first son (primary cesarean
after long first labor and 4 hours of pushing) was that I had a dedicated
IBCLC who was determined that I was getting the help I needed. My CBAC with
my third son - he wa sin the nusery for 24 hours to do mild acidosis at
birth - I knew what to do as an already successful twice bfing mother - so
I yelled at my husband as he exited the OR with son that the nursery staff
was NOT to give our son IV fluids, not to put anything in his mouth AT ALL,
and if they gave him formula I would sue them. I also made my postpartum
nurse take me to him 5 hours post surgery because they refused to bring him
to me at all... So after awhile of arguing I said fine and got up and walked
across the room to the wheelchair - in astonishment she finally relented - I
needed to FEED my son myself. He nursed well and we never had problems. I
stayed in the nursery nearly the next 24 hours so he could eat on demand.
Yep -- had to fight - nope shouldn't have had to --- and physically and
emotionally it was the most difficult thing I have ever done being a mom to
him with all my might - recovery yeah whatever couldn;t do that AND mother
my son well.....
I applaud hospitals that aid women and babies in getting the breastfeeding
off to a better start, however, sending them home two days post major
surgery is not beneficial and I believe will lend to poorer outcomes
for normal feeding and physically for moms who are going home totally ill
prepared and without knowing the type of support they need.
