I looked at Pamela Paul's website. I decided to write to her directly (may still write the Times), but she has just written a book called Parenting, Inc about all of the marketing of crap to parents. I think she is on the right track, but misinformed. She seems to lump LCs and doulas in with all of the other fads that are being shoved at parents today and does not understand that our professions have evolved out of a need to respond to all of the other marketing that is going on--ie drugged births and AIM. To be fair, she raises an issue we all talk about all of the time--what is an IBCLC anyway?? I think she could be an ally if she had more accurate information. It's worth a try, IMO. I've written the first draft and am going to rewrite it tomorrow. We shall see....There is some troubling info in her articles, but at least she is writing about an issue that we all tend to complain about here--the marketing of motherhood.
