I have not searched for further research re: this subject but feel the article
presented may not be the best research representation. It seems to be a
very small sample size over an 8 year period of data gathering. Secondly,
Just as skin gets stretch marks during pregnancy, weight gain, etc. and looses
it's elasticity I would tend to believe that for some breastfeeding women this
is also the case with their breasts. Especially if their cup size increases a
great bit with nursing (ie C cup to DD cup). I would also think that
consecutive pregnancies and breastfeeding time; especially with pregnancies
that occur close together, would have a compounded effect on the
breast/skin tissue because this does not give the breast time to recouperate
after it's important "work". Again, I have not searched the available research
but feel that we still need to remain supportive and listen to a mother who
feels her change in body image is due to breastfeeding. However, for non-
breastfeeding women who are avoiding breastfeeding solely to avoid breast
sagging we need to continue to encourage & educate on all the wonderful
benefits to mom & baby in regards to breastfeeding. Lets face it....all of us
will have sagging breasts at some point in life irregardless of our breastfeeding
choice unless we call on the cosmetic genius of plastic surgeons. I have just
recently found this site and am so grateful to everyone for their input,
knowledge, and experience. I think it is an invaluable resource for us all.
