We also have many 2day post op c/s going home. We initiate skin to skin as
soon as mom has returned to the floor. Rooming in with baby. Family member
or significant other stays with her. Most do well. For the moms that labored
up to 12 hrs, pushed 2-3 hrs, we try to keep the extra night. I try to
encourage them to stay the extra day until there milk is coming in. Not always
successful. The very young that go home with mom might breastfeed for 2 to
6 weeks but depends upon the support at home. Frequently change to bottle
and formula especially if she has to return to school. I follow up with phone
calls and they can stop in to see me if they are coming from an appointment. I
try to make a house visit if they are not able to come in. I work in a hospital
setting and if we have enough staff to cover for me to leave.
