Janice,
It may be this mom is experiencing an oxytocin response as part of breasts
refilling, thus the cramping. From experience, I've found that there are
individual differences in how moms experience inner breast changes, like ductal
refilling, letdown. She might try taking magnesium, a form like "Natural
Calm" has suggested doses on the container. I'd also suggest she apply heat at
first sign of cramping and definitely to work on reducing her supply. Is
there a specific reason she's pumping so frequently? She could start with
reducing the amount of time she pumps, and experiment with what feels comfortable
in terms of yield. Homeopathic remedies, if you have resources and mom is
interested can be helpful. Also, how comfortable is pumping with flanges she's
using? or too high suction?
This reminds me of a mom I worked with once who did one sided nursing at
night so her am yield with pumping was 12 oz, one breast. Needless to say we
worked together on lowering her supply and she chose to donate milk.
