How I wish that all babies that do skin to skin latch, but in the hospital are up
to 40percent c/s babies and the rest the moms have been induced and had
epidurals, so even with skin to skin, the babies are often wiped out for hours.
It is important to try to get that first nursing in that first wide awake hour.
Then do skin to skin. Also there are different protocals for the the late pre
term (34-37 weeks) or under 6 lbs in which they may have to supplemented.
But if full term healthy baby that is doing skin to skin and still won't latch, at
our hospital we do blood sugars after 6 hrs of not eating and keep trying. By
12 hrs if they didn't eat they will get supplemented. I'd like to hear how the
rest of the hospitals do it. thanks Linda Hansen RNC IBCLC Orange county CA
