Brandon is now 9 weeks old. Born with an Omphalocele (large umbilical hernia with an internal bowel blockage). Born at 38 weeks and 7+ lbs. First surgery took place on day of birth. After several says on gastric suctioning began oral feeds by bottle (Alimentum),touted by the surgeon and NICU nurses as the most elemental substance, although mom had plenty of pumped colostrum. I have been mom's Childbirth Educator, Doula and LC. After providing mom with prevention of NEC and colostrum studies her surgeon allowed mom to begin combining formula and breastmilk but in 1 week forced Brandon to increase from 18cc of alimentum to 75cc at which point he was vomiting and listless. Breastmilk was blamed by the nurses who suggested that baby Brandon might be allergic to mom's milk. Barium swallow revealed a bulbous blockage. Surgery # 2. Dr. stated that intestines were like an upside down tree and needed to be reaccordioned into position. Dr. stated that Baby's problem was purely mechanical. But since second surgery infant will not allow anything into mouth. Is absorbing very small amounts of formula therefore professionals are afraid to use breastmilk. Surgery #3 Friday 3/21/08. Brandon received a Jejunal button for feeding to bypass oral and stomach as he was found to have pyloric stenosis that was repaired this time.
Of course this baby has had many antibiotics and 2 rounds of serious thrush.
  The Good News!!
Mom has a freezer full of breastmilk and read the "Womenly Art" as if it were her mothering bible.
  Brandon weighs 10# 10oz.
Mom and Dad are anxious to bring their son home.
Could use any and all information to support this family. I have limited experience as an NICU RN.

  Thank you,
  Gen
