Hello Morgan,
Thank you so much for your wonderful references in/and the links!
In the Netherlands, there is a big discussion going on about dealing with
excessively crying babies.
We are invited to be present 21st November in the north of the country with
the stand from our volunteer breastfeeding association VBN on a symposium
about this topic. The organisation we were invited by, is BFHI-certified,
employs nurses who attend home deliveries (we call it 'kraamzorg', a nurse
in your home after your home delivery, which is quite normal in our country,
as you may know) and now organizes a training for their employees to inform
them about how to deal with excessively crying babies. My collegue got the
flyer with the invitation... flyer is made by an ABM producer!! Complete
with logo and colours and style... :-( We were shocked and very
disappointed. It makes me very angry, that many health workers don't seem to
ever get an unsponsored training, but that these ABM-people always manage to
get a grip on these health care workers again, via sneaky ways, pretending
to be 'good' and 'in favour of bf', leaving the hc workers impressed and
unconscious of what really happens...
We are now in doubt whether to attend and offer some contraweight, or be
present, not with our organisation, but as private persons, to monitor the
meeting and maybe ask 'uncomfortable' questions, either at the symposium or
later, in the policy group we are members of. Your links contain superb
material to strengthen my knowledge in this respect and to be able to bring
in valuable, well researched evidence for the opinion that babies shouldn't
be left alone to fall asleep by themselves and cry it out at such a young
age. I will print the whole thing, thoroughly read it and prepare for
whatever decision we will make, regarding attending or not.
I am very impressed with all the interesting discussions here. In my
association, I am known for my 'extremely' long postings, but compared to
many here, I'm a woman of few words! hahaha
Regards,
Marianne Vanderveen,
VBN-volunteer and IBCLC next year
