One possible confounder of the asthma study is where people live. There 
was an article in the tuesday science section of the NY Times a few 
months ago reporting on a research study that found that children who 
grew up within a certain distance of a highway had reduced lung 
function. I don't remember the details, but I'm sure a Medline search 
would bring it up.
