Diane,
Lovely word! We should rename you Wordsmith. :-)
Iatrocentric breastfeeding also doesn't come anywhere near the person
who _does_ the actual breastfeeding - the baby. In both discussion
lately, and reflection, I've come to realise that the baby is the active
agent in breastfeeding: in many senses all the mother needs do, is get
out of the baby's way and let baby do what comes naturally. The
majority of problems are caused by iatrocentric interventions - both to
the baby (in utero and out) and the mother. There are, of course, a few
situations where there is need for such intervention - but that should
be dealt with after the baby hasn't made it, for whatever reason.
Baby's placenta sets up lactation, placenta gives the 'go' signal on
departing, baby gets to the breast and does its stuff. thus collecting
the milk its biology set in place: no need for any iatrocentric
intervention unless this doesn't happen, and the need to remove any and
all iatrocentric interventions prior to this point that may prevent this
sequence establishing.
At least WHO and UNICEF are getting there on this - that's the whole
point of the 'Breast Crawl' video, which is to showcase their initiative
on the 'get the hell out of baby's way' programme. (my phrasing) One
wonders if your point has also been taken up, and in the large group of
women watching, there are pregnant mothers awaiting their own term
date? I must go back and look closely.... my eyes have only ever been
on the baby.
And if there is anyone on the is list who hasn't seen this amazing video
yet - and stayed 'till the end... it's on ...STOP PRESS! Oh gosh,
they've updated, and you can now embed the video link on any web
site...scroll down to the bottom, past the 'screen'.... and it's free on
CD on request! It's on....

Of course, you now have to match 'iatrocentric breastfeeding' with its
opposite - 'normal breastfeeding'. Is 'normal' posh enough? After all,
we already have three main contenders for the title of the opposite of
iatrocentric: a) baby led latching, b) biological nurturing and 3)
'breast crawl'. So we do need an appropriate word/phrase that
encompasses 'getting the hell out of baby's way'. Is there another
floor that needs mopped, if not, I can supply several. ;-)

Who did have a baby led 'breast crawl' latch at about 3 minutes post
partum.... to the shock and amazement of all concerned... not that
anyone was _intending_ that to happen... but we just got the hell out of
the baby's way!
