Hear hear, Nina! I have used your precise wording when talking to mothers in the hospital. They are fretting because Nurse Ratched, who was on last night, has warned her against having that 26-hour-old baby "use mom like a pacifier."
I arch an eyebrow, place a hand on my hip, and say: "So, if a mom can be a pacifier, I guess a pacifier can be a mom -- right?" I wait until it clicks ... which really does take a few seconds. Mom relaxes; maybe even smiles.
