Hi All
I had not heard the prolactin receptor theory explained in quite this way
before. (I tell antenatal mothers about the theory to help them understand
why early frequent feeding is important but rarely use it with post-natals.)
I have to say that the conclusion that missing out on 'early and often'
leads to intractably inadequate intake does not reflect what I see with
mothers here. When intake is intractably low, it is usually because mothers
are not able to come to terms with frequent (baby led) feeding. Usually
galactagogues don't work for these women because they are simply not willing
to feed their babies more often than third hourly. I have seen women go
from near-full formula feeding to full breastfeeding with little more than a
sling and willingness to prioritise feeding her baby. And what do we say to
adoptive mothers, surely not, 'You'll never be able to produce a full milk
supply.'?
