In these cases, I have to remind myself that our culture and community
have failed this woman/dyad/family, and that what she probably needs
most is to be loved unconditionally. So that's when I shift focus to
how hard it is to be a mom these days, no matter how you feed the baby,
and I offer to bring over a meal. Sometimes that's a magic wand. I
realize that we can't do this with every client, and it may cross a
line for those of you who actually get paid real money ;) but to me it
is a part of my vocation and I keep meals handy in the freezer for just
these kinds of situations.
