Holly: I think it is called the Australian hold, with a bit of variation. Thank you
for reaffirming my style of practice. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I remember a
mother at my support group a few years ago who was ordered by her husband
to come to group that week. She had attended a local LLL meeting earlier in
the week with her happily nursing 4 month old. During the meeting she was
nursing her baby and listening to the discussion. She said the leader was very
vocal in critizising the way she and baby were positioned - "You're doing it all
wrong!". Since the meeting, she had spent many hours crying about what a
terrible mother she was, etc. It was driving her husband nuts, so he ordered
her to come to the group and get some "help". She happened to be sitting
next to me on the floor as she was recounting her story, nursing. I looked at
her, looked at the baby and asked her: "Are you comfortable? "Yes." "Do
your nipples hurt?" "No." Is the baby gaining weight?" She burst out laughing
and said: "Look at him!" My response was: "Then who cares how you
position your baby!" He was sprawled in her lap nursing. The mom on the
other side of me remarked: "I like your style, Pam." No one likes to be told
what to do. If it works, then go for it!
As much as we sometimes "bash" medical and nursing staff for their rigid
management of breastfeeding, I think sometimes LCs are a mother's worst
enemy when "managing" (even that word has negative connotations!)
breastfeeding. Mom and baby will figure it out just fine if they are left alone
with good information.
