 Lisa,
Barley is considered by many holistic practitioners to be highly nourishing. I used barley water combined with maple syrup and slippery elm to heal my son's esophagus after surgery when he was little (before we were all gluten-free). It worked amazingly well. Ovaltine was originally made from barley malt, whey, eggs and coca and its purpose was to nourish children and lactating women. The original version contained no sugar and is what was first exported to India. In ayurveda, warm milk is used with many herbs to facilitate their healing properties, so it is no surprise that an Indian woman might have suggested this to you.
