Dear Friends:
Christine tells an inspiring story. Thank you, Christine, for sharing this
wonderful news.
I had a labor and delivery nurse speak out at a training I gave. She talked
of how she used to hate breastfeeding, because it meant more time spent
working when she already had so much to do after the baby was born. She described a
scene where she spent 20 minutes trying to make breastfeeding occur. At the
end of 20 minutes, she was angry, the mother was feeling like a failure and
the baby was furious. As the nurse had many other tasks to finish, she bundled
the mother and baby s2s and went about her work. About 2 minutes later, the
mother whispered "the baby's nursing". This wonderful nurse went on to extol
the value of s2s, and is making converts at work.
My slogan when I teach maternity staff is "skin to skin saves nurses
work!"........because it does. Everybody wins with skin to skin. (A rhyming slogan!)
Baby's blood sugar and temperature stay high, baby is calm, baby
self-attaches, mother connects with baby.........and the nurse can do everything that
has to be done, from checking a fundus to measuring a temperature to giving the
Vitamin K injection.
This is most exciting, and makes me optimistic that breastfeeding initiation
rates can be boosted in the whole USA!!
warmly,
