Hello Friends,
The local English language magazine ran an article this month called "Feeding Your Baby Healthily." Though, the author a dietician, does write that breastmilk is the optimal source of nutrition (and vaguely refers to articles that I have written for the same magazine) she writes that mothers who are not breastfeeding should use a milk based formula, explaining that:

"Yes, cow's milk is made for little cows. However, a cow's milk based formula has undergone a multitude of changes to make it totally inappropriate for cows and totally appropriate for human infants."

She then goes on to admit that:

"There are numerous micronutrients and biological factors in breast milk that can't be imitated in formulas. Despite that, most infant formulas on the market today will provide your infant with growth and development very close to that of a breastfed infant."

It is late here in Israel and I have to go to sleep and will write a letter to the editor and author tomorrow. I feel well armed with the facts especially with chapter one of Marsha Walker's Using the Evidence but would appreciate any input from you all on why cow's milk based formula is not appropriate for human infants.

The article can be read at www.connectionsmag.co.il

Thanks,
Chayn Fogelman IBCLC Israel
