In the UK, the big 'thing' mothers are warned about is 'don't let
your baby snack'....a baby feeding more often than some
arbitrarily-decided frequency is said to be 'just snacking' and this
is a Very Bad Thing. Books, HCPs and other mothers tell them 'it's
Very Bad because your baby won't gain weight' , which then scares the
mother .

This proscription about 'snacking' fits in very nicely with our
(relatively recent) cultural dislike of 'snacking' as something that
we (adults) shouldn't be doing. Why shouldn't we be doing it? Because
it makes us gain weight.

Very few people see the contradiction here.

Some books, HCPs and other mothers say snacking is Bad because the
baby won't get 'the hindmilk' - revealing a pitiful lack of
understanding about the research.

'Just snacking' and 'just feeding for comfort' are both thought to be
modes of feeding that should be discouraged.
