The only criticism my husband has ever made was 'you breastfed her too
long, she's far too independent for her age!' Forget what age, but sometime in
the early/mid teens
~~ Apologies if this was mentioned, but I don't use the term 'extended'
because it makes it sound like short durations are the biological norm. I like
to call it Full-tenure nursing, or normal nursing, or just ally it with
timing, Toddler/Preschooler nursing, and remind of the norm and human expectation
for this, etc. If someone uses the term "extended" I clarify to sadly admit
that according to US cultural norms, yes it is extended farther.
We also joke about the "clingy threat" statements we heard, especially funny
when watching one's 5 year old parasail hooked up to her big brother just
for the needed weight, watching same child tube behind a speedboat at age 1 with
mom and by 2 or 3, alone! Same "overly dependent child" who was not ready
for preschool at the "recommended age of 3" ran into class at age 4, sang in
front of a packed worship service at age 7 and co-preached with mom at age 15.
OH yes, so many problems with dependency issues...:) I think one important
thing my children learned, even as much as independence, is the importance of
loving and reciprocal interdependence. Oh and I think it helped me learn this
too...:)
Peace,
Judy
