I am hoping someone can help me with the following: A neighbor has a three-
year-old nursling diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis. She has battled
since her son's early infancy to keep him breastfeeding through the diagnosis
and food elimination phases of his health care, but now is really feeling run
down and touched out from being either pregnant or nursing for the past six+
years (she has a healthy older son in addition to the three year old) and has
asked me about the best way to wean. She has been strictly following her
son's elimination diet. She is willing to continue to nurse as long as she knows
her son is benefitting from the immunological properties, nutrients, and
comfort of nursing, however, if he can be safely, slowly, and gently weaned in
the near future she is wanting to explore that option. She is a very slender,
petite woman, and I have noticed that her weight is low. I do not think she
has any eating disorders. She plans to contine to eat a gluten-free diet after
weaning to protect her own health, although she would like to add in some of
the other foods that are restricted for her son in hopes of putting on some
weight. He will be seeing a hemotologist next week b/c of low iron count and a
cardiologist because of low heart rate. Are there any studies out there of
children in similar situations? I would like to be able to give her some
information as to how her milk is helping her son, but also explore with her if
he can safely and gradually wean. I am a firm believer in natural weaning and
have nursed my children until 6 and 4 1/2 years respectively--I am not
pushing weaning in any way. I just sense that she is at the end of her rope
and would like to give her encouragement to continue nursing but also present
weaning options so she can make the most informed decision.
thanks!
Leslie Cree (awaiting exam results with baited breath!)
