Right, Marianne.  And since in the U.S. we don't typically get home visits from a baby nurse, it'll take 4 - 6 weeks for a mom to get evidence of a solid weight gain pattern through her normal ped visits.  

And that's why I say that if at that point, the bottle messes up his suck, with some care, the mom will generally be able to get him back on track for breastfeeding suckle.  She can then wait a while to more firmly establish his suckling behavior before trying a bottle again.
