I just get a little twitching about my malpractice insurance if I am
suggesting a patient/client do something that departs from the manufacturers
guidelines. So, I use my favorite LaLecheLeague phrase, "...in the case of...many
mothers find..., however, the instructions from the manufacturer directs you
to do this". I also tell them to call the manufacturer (who iften tell them
something totally different than waht is in their product guide). This is very
time intensive for us. I do demonstrate the assembly of breastpump kit parts
and am clear about what needs cleaning and that people make different
choices based on their comfort level. If they still are concerned, I suggest they
call their Peds. office to talk to the person who helps with answering all
those questions. Imagine a parent, tired as they all are, asking a clerk in
Babys R Us how to clean something they sell. I doubt they would do much but
shrug their shoulders and I doubt they would be held resposible even if they
did give information.
Lastly, I have to also remember to mention that the first thing to do is to
wash your hands.
Regards,
Jeanne Rago
