Dear Friends,

As you can see from Morgan's post of the letter from Nestle, it appears that Nestle has cancelled their "wine and dine" talk that was to be held on June 12, 2008. YEAH!!! this is indeed a victory and the many people who participated in the email writing campaign are ecstatic. Thank you to so many of you who supported and held our hand during this time.

However, Nestle was not able to say the word cancel. Instead they said,

"In order to avoid placing those who have requested this information (Nestle is talking about the "wine and dine" talk) in any difficult situations, we have made arrangements to provide the requested information in an alternate manner"

Nestle in their letter also state,

"this educational event is in line with Code intent".

As you know the "wine and dine" talk (event) violates article 7.3 of the Code.

Because those of us organizing the demonstration, have no idea of what "alternate manner" means, ie.
change of venue? change of date? or ?, we are going to go ahead with our demonstration (hope you are reading this Nestle). Immediately following our demonstration, we will have a meeting to discuss what to do about Nestle - otherwise they will be back again next year trying to do the same thing! Please join us if you are in the Vancouver area.

Nestle likely felt the pressure to cancel because of the hundreds of emails that asked them to do so and because they knew we were planning press releases and a demonstration. We were also pleased to have the Minister of Health of the Province of B.C. write an amazing letter of support which was forwarded to Nestle. The Minister made it very clear that Nestle was violating the Code and he stated:

"I understand that community groups and breastfeeding champions have and continue to influence the outcomes of events that do not meet the standards of the Code. I encourage you to continue in the provision of this influence in order to promote and support breastfeeding". "And thank you for your continued attention to the promotion and protection of breastfeeding as the norm for infant feeding in B.C."

Any lactnetters who would like a copy of the letter from the Minister of Health please email me off list (don't expect an immediate response).

And now, I'm going to bed!!
