Sarah writes in regards to culturing breast milk for a premie:

Does this really happen elsewhere in the U.S.??? It sounds like they're
basically ensuring that my baby will receive formula (no donated human milk
at this hospital). Any ideas on how I can potentially protest this, or is
this a practice norm that we've just got to live with???

No, Sarah, it shouldn't happen anywhere in the US. The only practice that
occurs in some settings is that milk for premature babies less than 34 weeks
is frozen for 24 hr. in the hopes of killing most CMV. Once baby goes to
breast (hopefully before 34 weeks) this becomes a moot point. If Nancy Wight is
reading I'm quite sure she will weigh in on this and you can take that info to
the neos.
