 And taking it a step further out (and away from breastfeeding... I
apologize in advance)

If the baby's umbilical cord was cut quickly after birth, this can prevent
the surge of red blood cells, which can cause lifelong anemia.

The combination of the quickly cut cord (currently popular procedure)
combined with a formula or combined breastmilk/formula diet can certainly
affect a baby for a long time!

I will have a look at the paper, too.  My first question is, were all the
infants exclusively breastfed for the first six months?  The addition of
non-human milk to an infant's diet will affect iron absorption from
breastmilk in the early months.
