A moment where my shallow media habits are revealed! In a quite recent
"Antiques Roadshow" an old tin advertising plate for Nestle, in German,
was brought in by a punter. The antique expert explained it was quite
rare, as it showed Nestle from Germany, prior to the move to
Switzerland. (It wasn't for formula, as I recall). He was born
Heinrich Nestle (no accent on the e), and changed it to Henri Nestle (e
with an accent) when settled in Switzerland. He invented the formula
some years later, in Switzerland, according to the sources I've just
googled.
It occurred to me that it was odd that the company never acknowledged
that it had traded as Nestle (unaccented) in Germany prior to the move
to Switzerland... but perhaps it was easier for the family to establish
in Switzerland without reference to the reasons for hurrying out of
Germany, hence the name change. Which was why I mentioned it for the
paper, as that's a small but interesting point in terms of European history.
