I have a mother in my BF support group whose son was diagnosed with
diabetes at 2 weeks (mom says 1:500,000 for neonatal diabetes). Baby's
dad was diagnosed when he was 7 weeks so parents were checking baby's
blood and caught it right away. Mom is very matter of fact about glucose
testing baby--says she tests morning, noon, evening, and once in middle
of the night. Doesn't seem to affect her breastfeeding at all. If your
mom received the diagnosis "out of nowhere" it is probably has thrown her
for more a loop than for a family which already has a diabetic. I bet
the mom I know would be willing to "talk" to the mom you're working with,
if she's interested.
Warmly,
