One stated reason is, it helps reduce the numbers of mothers having babies every year. Having a baby every year increases the risk of premature births, use of the NICU, and of unhelathy or at-risk mothers, or mothers needing cesarean sections.
There's some truth to that. But why can't they discuss that with the mothers and their partners / husbands? Why do they assume the mothers will not wait the recommended 6 weeks before resuming marital relations?
What about Informed Choice as opposed to Informed Consent?
