Phyllis - These situations irk me. Some are unaware of what harm MDs are
capable of when it comes to birth and breastfeeding (BF). Yes, there are
some ethical MDs, but not enough; there are some who are well-informed about
natural childbirth and BF, but not enough. Anesthesiologists have no place
in talking to a woman while she is in labor; that suggests that the woman
needs the information. What for? If there is an emergency that requires
surgery, that is the time for the anesthesiologist to come on the scene.
The women who come in screaming for an epidural have been indoctrinated in
our culture to believe that they have to have it;
I know from personal experience how women are badgered into accepting
interventions in birth and BF. Many moms in my BF support groups have told
us. My daughter was one who had a terrible experience in one of the NY City
hospitals; the OB resident kept pushing the epidural and was angry when my
daughter refused it. The resident actually stomped out of the room and
SLAMMED the door while my daughter was in the middle of contractions. Then
there wan an RN who was wonderful. She praised my daughter and said that
was the first time she had witnessed a most beautiful natural birth. It
takes all kinds to make the world go round. The next RN who came into the
room tried very hard to SNATCH the baby out of my daughter's arms to take
her to the nursery. We fought her off like lionesses protecting their
young; I actually stepped in front of her and told her to back off. My
granddaughter NEVER went to the nursery; never had a bath in the hospital;
spent all her time in arms or on someone's chest. Some staff members were
glad to leave us alone; others did it out of spite (we did not need them
anyway).
There are no childbirth classes in any of the hospitals in my area that
teach the importance of no interventions, no drugs, no separation, etc. The
instructors who would want to teach that information are probably afraid of
losing their jobs - as well they should be; some have. All I can say is
THANK YOU to all you brave ones who keep plugging away at this; it is an
uphill battle in which we cannot let the other side win.
Warm regards,
Lee
