I just mentioned this a couple of days ago on another board... One of my
nursing school exam questions was: When does a nursing mother's menstruation
return? I was dumbfounded because every answer was a number of weeks with no
answer making any particular sense. Later I was told that the correct answer
was 16 weeks. I became an IBCLC before I became an RN, so of course, NONE
of the possible answers were correct. When I pointed out the information was
completely erroneous, my instructor told me to just pay attention to the
book. I thought, "Great, it doesn't matter whether the information is wrong or
not, as long as it is in the book." I have found breastfeeding information to
be particularly antiquated in nursing school texts. I literally had to
answer questions incorrectly on the NCLEX when it came to some
lactation/postpartum questions because I needed to pass the test, and I KNEW that they were not
up to date on thrush, mastitis, weight gain etc. It irks me to see poor
information being taught as fact in a nursing program.
