It's not just California, hospitals everywhere are dealing with patient
education, partly because of a JCAHO (Joint Commission on the Accreditation
of American Hospitals ) initiative.
I'm on our hospital Patient Family Education Council. We try for FOURTH
GRADE reading levels, because people under stress have a hard time reading
at a 6th grade level. And excellent book on this is from Lippincott-
Teaching Patients with Low Literacy Skills, 2 nd ed. Ceclia Doak, Leonard
Doak and Jane Root.
