It is possible to have an induction/augmentation and not the 'mandatory
epidural' that goes with it.  I am not sure if pitocin is a different trade
name for the syntocinon that is used here but I have birthed via both
natural spontaneous labour and via syntocinon induction.  I used entonox
(gas) in transition but was otherwise analgesic free.  The key, for me was
not allowing myself to be positioned on my back - ever.  I spent most of my
labour in the shower, on a fit ball and eventually on all fours for
delivery.
I spent yesterday aternoon watching birth videos on you tube and cringed to
see so many women struggling to push babies past obstructed coccyx (because
she was sitting/lyin on it) up hill.  I can't believe how many women in the
US still give birth in stirrups.  No wonder the epidural rate approaches
universality.  I don't think it's the pit, I think it's the position.
Judging by the titles these were supposed to be joyous celebrations but I
came away from most of them with a deep sense of the loss of power and
dignity these women had experienced.  Is it any wonder that they don't
believe their bodies can nourish a baby?
