Thanks for those contributions about how the words have altered with the
culture in Sweden, Marit.

It's funny how some things become a trend. I know a baby actively feeds at
or from the breast - breastfeeds. And that is being emphasized by some
right now since we are so aware of babies crawling to the breast after birth and
finding the breast. So I can certainly see that my baby breastfeeds.

But I think I participate as well by offering my breasts. ;-) So what
would the mother's participation be called? Feeding with the breasts, or
breastfeeding.

Personally I'd love it if feeding my baby meant at the breast with out the
breast added in front of feeding.

I used 'nurse' with my babies as in "Oh, you'd like to nurse now?' Which
morphed into na na for the first child, and na nee with the second. One also
used 'side' as in "you want the other side? " We went wild with the third.
;-) Something like na nee na nee boo boo.

The Websters' Collegiate still has these:

A baby sucks (to draw milk from the breast with the mouth) and a mother
suckles (to give to with the breast; to nurture as if by giving milk from the
breast). These terms are also indicated for calves at the udder.

But 'suck' gets used in so many ways now that the word might seem derogatory
to some here in the states, the way some people associated boob with being a
boobie, or 'idiot'.

Plus it sounds strange to my modern ears to say to my baby, "Oh, you'd like
to suck now?"
