Hi all
Vaseline comes in a tub here rather than a tube. There has been some study
done with paw paw ointment (which is packaged in a tub) vs sterile lanoline
(in a tube) and the risk of mastitis. Results indicated that mothers who
use paw paw ointment on damaged nipples have higher rates of mastitis. Two
theories of aetiology were presented. Either the paw paw ointment is
contaminated at the point of manufacture/packaging or it becomes
contaminated when mothers dip their fingers in the tub (many mothers also
use paw paw ointment for nappy rash so ... ew!). It sounds like the
opthalmic ointment is presented in a tube and I for one would be more
comfortable with that for damaged skin.
Cheers
