With permission to post:
I recvd a call via LLL about a mom who had a c-section on 8/31 and was
asked to call her due to many complications to include NICU baby and mom
has cerebral palsy. She delivered baby at 37 weeks and he has been
tranferred to another hospital about 45 minutes from us and is intubated at
this time. She was not able to pump at the hospital, she says she was pretty
drugged up until she stopped taking so she could leave to see her baby. She
was not asked if she wanted to breastfeed past admission where she said she
was not sure. She was not given any info on discharge about pumps or care of
her breasts. She arrived at the NICU where the baby is and was told to go buy
a pump they had nothing for her (this is a level III NICU) and mom is not able
to do that. Due to her insurance I am not able to rent her a pump that her
insurance will pay for and since it is a holiday weekend WIC is not open until
Tuesday of which she is enrolled in. I got this call at 10 pm last night and told
mom who was on her way to the hosptial to ask for a charge nurse if she was
told they had no pumping room or ways to help her. I did not hear back as of
this morning (7 AM) and am hoping she at least got to pump while she was
there. However if she was not able to I expalined how to hand express
because one of her hands works and the other is minimal and she asked about
hand pumps. Anyone had a CP patient where hand pumping was used and if so
which one? I have my favorites but would like further info for this case. Again
problems are: Mom has CP and was not able to use the Nurture III she was
given by a friend, baby in out of area NICU that says they have no pumps for
her and I am only rental place in whole county where she resides and cannot
rent to her for insurance reasons and WIC does not open until Tuesday due to
holiday...frustrated and wanting to help this mother anyway that I can. Please
copy to me and list when posting.
