Hello, my name is Casey Reynolds and I am a student at Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana. I have been doing some research on nipple confusion with the pacifier or thumb, not the bottle. I was interested in this because we know that non-nutritive sucking is very important. The study I found in the Pediatrics journal did a comparative study between pacifiers and thumb sucking while breastfeeding. It found that thumb sucking really had no effect on breastfeeding where as pacifiers led to fewer daily feedings, shorter suckling time, and sooner weaning than desired. The article from www.babycenter.com said that nipple confusion usually occures within the first 4 weeks of life and can lead to nursing strike, sore nipples and breast engorgement. The journal article from the La Leche League website says that not all babies will develop nipple confusion but to treat them all like they are at risk anyway. My question is then why is non-nutritive sucking so important if the recommendations are to not introduce anything other than the breast? What do you tell your moms who want to give their babies a pacifier right away? How do you do it to not make the moms feel bad about their decision to use a pacifier? I look forward to your responses.
