Dear Friends:
We all have psychic powers when it comes to birth in the USA. What LC in
this country hasn't mentally guessed "epidural/pitocin" and been correct when a
dyad presents itself for breastfeeding help in the first week postpartum?
After listening to a friend talk about all the ultrasounds she had during her
pregnancy because one medical doubt or another, I predicted to my husband when
she was 7 months pregnant that she would have a cesarean section. This was 13
years ago, and I was right.
I feel sad at the slaughter of my sisters. I feel sad that many of these
women SAY (who knows what they feel or believe) that ' X' was necessary when
they have not connected the dots between routine technology and misery. I feel
heartbroken for the women that go back into the very same system that ripped
them off, and defend it to anyone. I feel like a dinosaur, watching the death
of normal birth in my country, when folks are aghast or disbelieving when I
encourage spontaneous, unmedicated labor with a doula. I am upset when folks
confuse the words "common" and "normal."
I am sad when women won't seek any care unless an insurance company will pay
for it. A woman called me back the other day, canceling our appointment
because her insurance wouldn't cover the fee. I suggested that our visit would be
cheaper than formula, but that didn't impress her at all.
I am waiting for the revolution, where women take back their birthing power
as they did in the late 50s and early 60s.
warmly,
