I do accept the formula cans given to moms in our support group - and take
them to our Public Health Nurses. Often these nurses make home visits and
find babies and families in dire straights and either breastfeeding is not
going well and supplementation is necessary (as Linda Smith says: feed the
baby is rule #1) or the are not breastfeeding and never planned to...but now
they're without money OR food for their babies.
The formula they carry is a temporary bridge to either get breastfeeding
going or to get a family through the weekend until they can access
services... ALL the nurses, at some point have had to dig into their own
pockets to keep a baby or family going...
It was a real eye-opener when I began working here! Poverty is all around
us but many never see it!
