I have experienced this at times, and I breastfeed each of my five children
for up to 14 months each. The time that stands out the most, I was in a
big-box store and heard a brand-new baby crying frantically to be fed. His
mother, obviously exhausted and without sufficient support, was pushing
him/her in the cart, shuffling the way women do when they're not a week
postpartum. I felt a strong let-down reflex along with an almost
overwhelming instinct to scoop the baby up and nurse him/her. At that time,
I had not breastfed for about 8 years.
Karen Pryor talked about this a little in Nursing Your Baby, at least the
older version that I read over and over when I was nursing my youngsters.
