Dear Friends:
Isn't Liz asking about relactation here? The supply has diminished because
not enough was removed so an LC's strategies here would be to find ways to wake
up the breasts.
As Liz has said, pumping, s2s, and whatever else that makes a mother feel
optimistic. Maybe using a tube feeding device at breast if baby will latch can
help too. When will the volume come up?
We can't know, or promise when that will happen. However, there is that old
saw "it will take about as long as it took for the milk to go
away".........so if it has been a month since she's nursed, it could take month for things
to turn around. But this isn't set in stone either, as people are so variable.
Remember the organ we need to target is her brain. So friendly telephone
calls, listening to her ventilate, encouraging her to continue, reminding her
how her baby will benefit.........and being open and loving when she wants to
throw in the towel; all these in our toolbox.
Some mothers feel very encouraged to learn that mothers that haven't been
pregnant can make milk. Men can make milk. The mother the LC is working with has
had the advantage of being pregnant and delivering a placenta. This is a big
boost.

Hence my query. I can "soothe and encourage" with the best of them, but I'm
haunted by the thought that the majority of receptors in their breast tissue
are too far involuted to make this labor-intensive care plan plausible. Am I
off my rocker here? I never make promises, and I never-say-never ... but I
also believe mothers are entitled to the dignity of a realistic picture of what
the future holds.
So -- what is the realistic picture that *you* paint with moms like this?
