Dearest, Rachel, Jaye and Heather,
Please recall I sent this to "Ana" off line (not) because she asked for help,
and when this mom delivers she will have IV's in her hand and won't be able
to sit up and remove milk herself. I'm sure there are many videos better than
the one i came up with (for the normaly healthy term infant) but given the
unique circumstances, this mommy will need someone to help express her
milk. Some of you took issue to the fact that she was not doing it herself.
well, she may not be able to. fact is she is will be in the hospital in bed after
a c/s with IV's probably in her hands. A nurse hopefully an LC will be assisting
her, not to mention all the possible rules and regulations and red tape that
come with being in the hospital and a baby in the NICU. The sessions shown
were from a MD who I don't know, and perhaps her techniques were not the
same as yours, but with this womans breast reduction and a premature baby,
with special needs who will need surgery immediately after birth, hopefully she
will be able to get colostrum/milk to give to her
sweet baby. I guess i did not see what you saw. gentle compression using
both breasts yeilded colostrum. yes, it could have been done differently,
there is no ONE way to express milk with every breast type. There are only
techniques. She may have been over exaggerating her motions of pushing in
around the aereola and compressing it, but she was trying to teach something
using a live body. Not animation. I thought the MD was trying to be gentle
and kind with those women and then it went on to show them giving small
amts to a baby in SCN. Which is the exact scenario of where this baby will
be. I thought it was appropriate to give to Ana under these special
circumstances. You, of course have the right to your own opinions. I saw no
harm and yes some people liked it. If you look for something wrong, you will
find it. If you look for the positive useable material you will find that too. I
hope we will all be rooting for this mom and baby to survive and thrive instead
of picking apart a video, that for the most part was hospital based, and
supposed to be. I like the rest of you learn something new everyday. I
hope Ana can take away the portions she likes, not the part about using this
for every baby, of course not, but apply to her client what help she may get
from this video. Marianne, you can use the link. It belongs to Stanford
University. If you need help with this please feel free to e-mail me off line.
once again I didn't undelete "to the list". I think i will remember now.
Best,
robin
up way too early for work.
